South Carolina law now requires that abuse, neglect or exploitation of an adult living in a facility operated by or contracted for operation by the Department of Mental Health and the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs be reported to the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED).

Call 866-200-6066 immediately if you have knowledge of an adult living in one of these facilities who has been a victim of abuse, neglect or exploitation

ANYONE who has actual knowledge of abuse, neglect, or exploitation must report to SLED, including service providers, family and friends.

ANYONE who has reason to believe that abuse, neglect, or exploitation has occurred or may occur MAY report to SLED.

Failure to report actual knowledge of abuse, neglect or exploitation is a crime punishable by imprisonment for 1 year or a fine of $2500.  Interference with an investigation is a crime punishable by imprisonment for 3 years or a fine of $5000.  Failure to report may also be grounds for discipline by a licensing board.
