
South Carolina law now requires that abuse, neglect or exploitation of an adult living in a facility operated by or contracted for operation by the Department of
Mental Health and
the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs be reported to the
State Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Call 866-200-6066 immediately if you have knowledge of an adult
living in one of these facilities who has been a victim of abuse, neglect or
exploitation
ANYONE who has actual knowledge of abuse, neglect,
or exploitation must report to SLED, including service providers, family
and friends. ANYONE who has reason to believe that abuse,
neglect, or exploitation has occurred or may occur MAY report to SLED. Failure to report actual
knowledge of abuse, neglect or exploitation is a crime punishable by
imprisonment for 1 year or a fine of $2500. Interference with an investigation
is a crime punishable by imprisonment for 3 years or a fine of $5000. Failure
to report may also be grounds for discipline by a licensing board. Please see the following
